Speed Skating at Nottingham

Had a great afternoon photographing the speed skating at Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham yesterday. It’s quite a few months since I covered any significant sporting event so it was great to get the gear out & get back on the horse so to speak. Speed skaters make great subjects - colour, shape, motion it’s all there and other than it being a bit cold you’re not at the mercy of the weather. They had most of the stadium lights on yesterday (not always the case) so the light was good too. Here’s a typical one;

New Lightroom lecture has its first outing

I delivered my new Lightroom lecture last night and I’m pleased to say it went down pretty well. Lightroom is a fundamental component of my workflow, so talking about its virtues certainly doesn’t come hard to me - I love what you can achieve with this relatively straightforward program!

I really enjoy lecturing. Sharing my images and the techniques I use to get them lets me relive the experience all over again. It’s a completely different satisfaction from doing ok in competitions with them because it’s more personal - I get to meet photographers from different backgrounds and genres, put faces to names and hear about their experiences of shooting similar themes.

I’ve just added a new lecture so I now have five; two on underwater, two technical & one on sport. There’s plenty of variety so I’ll not tire of delivering the same material, but tbh I can’t ever see that happening.

First One-to-Two delivered

I ran my first one-to-two workshop last week & I really enjoyed it. I moved into my home studio around 4 months ago & I must say it’s been a really positive thing to do, it’s a great working space with much more natural light and I feel really comfortable working here. The added bonus is I can now run these personal workshops for up to 2 people. Peter & Sue are members of a local camera club with many years experience, so it was great that they showed sufficient confidence in me to book without any prior feedback. We ran through the same material as per a standard workshop but amended the content and pace to suit their needs. This worked really well I felt and for my part it was perhaps a little more satisfying than a larger group because there was more interaction. I have 3 more workshops of this type booked in the next few months and I’m really looking forward to them now.

The Zoological Photographic Club

I’ve been invited to join the Zoological Photographic Club, which has just 28 members. Here’s an extract from my acceptance letter;

“ You will be the 258th member of the ZPC since our formation in June 1899! During that very long period, many of the very greatest British natural history photographers and print makers have been members. Eric Hosking, Emma Turner, Richard Kearton, John Markham, Harold Auger and Morrey Salmon were all ZPC members. Our folios have been circulating nonstop now for 120 years. Once photographers join, they are usually members for life, or at least for a very long time”

Oh my! So pleased I decided to buy an underwater camera :-)
