Diving Gannets

Gannet Image Chosen by Renowned Wildlife Artist

David Miller (www.davidmillerart.co.uk) creates the best paintings of fish in their natural habitat I have ever seen. I have one of his prints of a common carp on my studio wall (I can’t afford an original!) and I love it.

David often gets his inspiration / the source material on which to base his paintings from underwater photographs, because he’s an underwater photographer too. Given this common interest we’ve had several email exchanges - he’s really helpful and generous in sharing information. If you look for him on Instagram you’ll see videos of him building up the original paintings - for a non artist it’s facinating.

You can imagine my delight when he asked if he could use one of my gannet images as a possible starting point for a painting. Now he must have 100s of alternatives to start working on at any time, so it might never happen - but just the possibility is fine by me :-)

The one he chose is below.

Best Nature Photograph in the World - Again!

Just heard that Diving Gannets took the Gold medal in the Nature Wildlife category in the World Photographic Cup - full results here.

The WPC is the only Olympics style event in the world for Photography. WPC Chief Executive Officer Giuseppe Scozzi, who led the ceremony, said “Over the past ten years the competition has grown and with it the standard of entries. WPC truly showcases the best in photography from across the world. Those who do succeed can truly claim to have created the best photography in the world and WPC is the vehicle for showcasing this work.”

In 2019 it was voted best image in the world at the FIAP World Cup, so this is the second time it has taken the honour.

Thank you to the gannets of Shetland!

Back in November I was told that my Diving Gannets image had been selected as one of twenty-four images to represent the UK in the World Photographic Cup. Thirty-two countries competed this year and yesterday the Finalists and “Best of Nation” Awards were announced at Imaging USA 2023.

Today I was told my image has been chosen as the UK’s “Best of Nation” image;
