Workshop

Workshop Delivered Via Zoom - I'm a Zoom Fan!

I’ve now delivered my one-day workshop How To Create Competition Winning Images via Zoom and it works really well. Actually, remote delivery brings some advantages;

  • I split it over 2 mornings so it’s easier for everyone to keep their concentration levels up - and that includes me! Room hire costs & set up would prohibit this normally

  • when I demonstrate the live Photoshop sessions it’s much easier to see the detail of what I’m doing because you see it on your own screen which is set up in a comfortable viewing position for you. It can be difficult to see the detail on a projected screen unless I can get the room really dark

Interaction is still good because questions can be asked at any time either directly or via the chat facility.

One-to-one tutorials on Photoshop & Lightroom are popular too for the same reasons. One hour sessions allow for real concentrated attention to one aspect of image editing.

I’ve also delivered 26 lectures via Zoom over the last 9 weeks of lockdown and never had a problem with any of them. At least 50% of these have been for camera clubs that would have been too far to travel for one lecture, both in terms of time & cost, so they probably would not have happened in normal times.

I know we’ve had Zoom forced upon us by this awful pandemic, but I really think that it has established a positive role in amateur photography that will continue into normal times. I certainly hope so because I’m definitely a Zoom fan!

Newark Workshop Feedback

Just received this feedback from the Newark workshop. Makes it all worthwhile…

I have managed to speak to many of the members who attended on Saturday and have heard nothing but praise both for the presentation and content of the workshop.  Comments received were; excellent, very good, very inspirational, brilliant, great day, very professional.  Some expanded their answers with; really enjoyed it, first class information, interesting, learned something, motivated me to develop my skills, stimulated my interest, well organised, good value for money, not precious with your knowledge, the USB stick alone is worth the attendance fee.  One member has used her knowledge to improve an image for our PDI comp next Monday.  Another is going to upgrade his computer to be able to use CC.  Some have had time to view the videos and are very impressed.  One asked if you could do a lecture to the students at Lincoln Uni - the 3 students all enjoyed the day.

Thank you so much for this day, a comprehensive and professional presentation I would recommend to anybody whether or not success in photographic competitions is the aim.

Please say thank you to Marlies.

All the  best and looking forward to seeing you again in the future.

Newark Workshop Feedback

First One-to-Two delivered

I ran my first one-to-two workshop last week & I really enjoyed it. I moved into my home studio around 4 months ago & I must say it’s been a really positive thing to do, it’s a great working space with much more natural light and I feel really comfortable working here. The added bonus is I can now run these personal workshops for up to 2 people. Peter & Sue are members of a local camera club with many years experience, so it was great that they showed sufficient confidence in me to book without any prior feedback. We ran through the same material as per a standard workshop but amended the content and pace to suit their needs. This worked really well I felt and for my part it was perhaps a little more satisfying than a larger group because there was more interaction. I have 3 more workshops of this type booked in the next few months and I’m really looking forward to them now.

New workshop added - Perfect Prints

As I give my lectures around the country the topic I’m most asked about is printing. It seems so many people have had (or continue to have) bad print experiences. I’m passionate about printing & I’ll admit to wasting a fair amount of ink & paper in the early days, but I’m glad to say all that’s behind me now. I genuinely believe that if you set up your printer and software correctly you’ll never waste another drop of ink, what you see on your monitor is what you’ll get on the printed paper. Join me for a one day printing workshop & I guarantee you’ll leave with the skills & settings to get 100% perfect prints every time.

First workshop delivered!

I ran my first workshop last Sunday - and I really enjoyed it! I delivered a fair bit of business training in my 30s so it’s not completely new to me, but I must admit it was daunting having 20 people looking to you, and only you, for instruction over 6 hours. I’d put lots of preparation in and I was certainly glad I had, it’s remarkable how some simple Photoshop technique you’ve done a 100 times before suddenly becomes very difficult! One of the most challenging aspects for me was not on the day though, it was recording the 22 videos that cover every component of my workflow in complete detail. The actual learning time is 5½ hours but I reckon it took at least 10x this to record and edit them. I’m falling increasingly in love with making videos so in that regard, whilst it was hard work, it was great fun too. Everyone gets to take them away on a USB stick & several people have already come back to me and said how useful they are finding them to use in their own time, so that makes the hard work worthwhile. All in all I feel the first workshop went well and the feedback I’ve received since confirms that, so I’m really looking forward to the next one now - it’s at the end of January. Bring it on :-)
